"I wanted to add an omniverous Taverna - "Cretah Corner Taberna" - to your recommendations. Run by Nikos (Cretan) and Sue (English), they have built and opened a Taverna in the community of Megala Chorofia about 15km east of Hania on Crete. They grow much of their own organic produce, use their own organic Olive Oil, have a dedicated veggie menu, excellent local wine and dancing every Saturday night (best to book). Lovely setting looking towards the White Mountains, only 5 mins drive off the national highway.
We went on a number of occasions over two weeks. Vegetarian menu offers local specialties as starters or main courses (this is all from memory):
Horta - mountain Greens
Briam - the local answer to ratatouille
Greek Salad - Feta, tomato, cucumber, onion, olives
Bouraki - Cheese pie made with filo pastry
Tzatziki - Yoghurt with grated cucumber
Stuffed Peppers and Tomatoes
Stuffed aubergine
Fava bean dip
Cheese balls (deep fried local cheese with crisp parmesan coating
There are always at least 4 veggie manis available, but you can combine starters to make a substantial meal."
